The SIGGRAPH 95 GraphicsNet Kiosk system consisted of 18 Silicon Graphics WebFORCE Indy workstations (complete with IndyCams and microphones) distributed around the LA convention center connected via ATM to a Challenge/L server in the Silicon Graphics booth on the show floor.
The kiosks used a modified version of WebSpace Navigator to present a VRML interface which allowed users to explore the LA Convention Center in a realtime virtual environment. Users could walk through the virtual showfloor, visit the interactive communities and interactive entertainment areas, find out about the courses, papers and panels, peek in on other kiosks and visit the wizard's world.
The most popular feature on the kiosks was wizard's world - a shared virtual environment. In wizard's world, users experienced a virtual art gallery where they could see and hear each other. Users could also leave a live snapshot of themselves in the world. Their picture was taken with the IndyCam and transfered to one of the texture maps in the gallery frames. This social environment quickly took on a life of its own. People began playing follow-the-leader, making party dates (complete with posted invites!), and quizzing each other on what their avatars look like.
The second most popular feature was the Kiosk Peek-a-Boo. Users could click on a map of the convention center to "peek" in on another kiosk's IndyCam. The image would update continuously, giving a view of what the other users were doing.
The world that was used for the kiosks (in .iv format) is accessable by clicking on the picture above. Please note that the multi-user aspects of this world are not installed and the URL links inside the world are probably defunct by now.
